The land was stone pine and a sand beach when Trust Houses Forte bought it in 1962, and the resort opened six years later — so the line about Portugal's first luxury resort is a gloss the company itself does not make, and Penina opened first in the Algarve in 1966. Seven hundred metres west lies Loulé Velho, a Roman villa with salting tanks that the sea is taking away: potsherds and graves on the beach.
This is an estate, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
