Samuel Gacon printed the Pentateuch in Hebrew here in 1487, the first book printed anywhere in Portugal — a Jewish press in a provincial port, five years before the expulsion. In 1755 the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa took the wave, Faro was the one coastal town not wrecked, and it became the regional capital the year after.
