Six caravels came in here in 1444 with two hundred and thirty-five captives, licensed by Henry the Navigator, who took a fifth of the value: the first documented European market in enslaved sub-Saharan Africans. The building that survives is not that market but a successor of 1691, and it opened as a museum in 2016.
