Salt Since the Fourth Century BC
Portrait
Salt has been worked in these pans since at least the fourth century BC, Afonso III reserved every saltern here to the Crown in 1266, and the flor de sal carries a European protected designation from the same ground. The seven-arched bridge over the Gilão, long called Roman, is medieval — the municipality says so itself.
