Aramco laid the town out in the 1930s on a fishing settlement of a few dozen families, and the grid it drew is still legible in the older blocks. The King Fahd Causeway runs twenty-five kilometres from here to Bahrain across the gulf and has done since 1986, which makes this the only Saudi city a driver can leave the country from without an aircraft.
