Banská Štiavnica
The Silver Academy
Portrait
Banská Štiavnica sits in a collapsed caldera and was one of Europe's richest silver towns; in 1762 it founded the world's first technical university dedicated to mining, which taught the methods used from Mexico to Siberia. Its engineers built sixty artificial reservoirs, linked by tunnels, to power the pumps — a hydrological system studied in its own right.
