Johannesburg

Johannesburg exists because gold was found on the Witwatersrand in 1886 — it has no harbour, no river and no strategic position, and it grew from nothing to the largest city in South Africa on mining alone. Soweto, built to house the labour, produced two Nobel laureates on one street, and the Apartheid Museum issues visitors a random race classification at the door.
