Cuenca sits on a spur between two river gorges, and when the town ran out of ground the medieval builders cantilevered houses over the drop — the casas colgadas project into empty air above the Huécar with wooden balconies and no visible support. One of them now holds a museum of Spanish abstract art, which is the reason many people come.
