The Marqués de Salamanca laid out the grid in the 1860s with wide streets, sewers and the city's first horse tramway, and went bankrupt doing it; the quarter carries his name and he died owing money on it. It is now the most expensive residential ground in Spain, which is the usual fate of a developer's vision and rarely of the developer.
