Augustus founded Emerita Augusta in 25 BC for veterans of two legions, and it became the capital of Lusitania — the theatre, amphitheatre, circus, two aqueducts and a 792-metre bridge all survive. The theatre has held a classical drama festival every summer since 1933, which makes it a working building rather than a monument.
