Sartre called it the town of three lies — it is neither holy nor flat nor by the sea — and its single street of stone manor houses was preserved because the aristocracy left and nobody had money to rebuild. Altamira is two kilometres away: the painted cave is closed, but the full-scale replica shows what seventeen thousand years of pigment looks like.
