From 1503 every ship returning from the Americas had to unload at Seville, seventy kilometres up a river, and the Casa de Contratación taxed and recorded all of it — the wealth built the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the Archivo de Indias, which holds eighty million pages of that empire's paperwork. Columbus's tomb is carried by four kings inside the cathedral.
