Joseph McMicking bought two thousand hectares of Andalusian coast in 1962 and had Robert Trent Jones lay out his first European course on it two years later. Polo grounds, a marina and a second Trent Jones course at Valderrama followed, and the estate has kept a single controlled entrance throughout, which is what separates it from a resort strip.
