Polonnaruwa
The Gal Vihara Buddhas
Portrait
Polonnaruwa replaced Anuradhapura in the eleventh century, and Parakramabahu I built a reservoir so large it is called the Sea of Parakrama — his principle was that no drop of rain should reach the sea unused. The Gal Vihara's four Buddha figures, carved from a single granite outcrop, include a seven-metre reclining figure whose stone grain runs unbroken through it.
