Kiruna

The Town That Moved
Wilderness TownsIndustrial Heritage
Portrait

Kiruna sits on the world's largest underground iron ore mine, and the extraction has deformed the ground so much that the town is being physically relocated — the church, built in 1912 and voted Sweden's most beautiful building, was moved whole in 2025. The Icehotel at Jukkasjärvi is rebuilt each winter from river ice and melts each spring.
