The railway south reached here in 1911 and Bangkok discovered it had a coast; Rama VII built a summer palace on the shore in 1929 and called it Klai Kangwon, far from worries. He was there when the 1932 revolution ended absolute monarchy, so the name has been read as irony ever since, and the palace is still a royal residence.
