Ephesus was a harbour city of a quarter of a million until the Cayster river silted its port and left it five kilometres inland, which is precisely why so much survives — nobody rebuilt over it. Enter by the upper gate and walk downhill to the Library of Celsus and pay for the terraced houses, where mosaics and frescoes remain under a modern roof.
