Fethiye stands on ancient Telmessos, and the tomb of Amyntas — a temple façade cut into the cliff in 350 BC — looks down on the marina from directly above the town. An earthquake levelled the place in 1957, so the streets below are modern while the necropolis above is two and a half thousand years old, and sarcophagi stand in the middle of car parks.
