The name means marked stone: the sultans practised archery here and set stones where the arrows fell, and a few of the markers still stand between the apartment blocks. The quarter was built for the court after the palace moved to Dolmabahçe, and it has been the address of Istanbul's publishers, writers and shops ever since.
This is a quarter, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
