Calcium-rich water flowing over a cliff for millennia has built white travertine terraces two thousand seven hundred metres long, and the Romans built Hierapolis on top of them as a spa city — you can swim among its fallen marble columns in a thermal pool. Walking on the terraces was banned in the 1990s after hotels drained the water and the white turned grey.
