Troy

Schliemann dug straight through the hill in 1871 looking for Homer's Troy and destroyed several of the nine settlements layered here; archaeologists now put the Trojan War, if it happened, at level VI or VIIa. The ruins are modest — come for the stratigraphy, which is laid out and labelled, and for the fact that this is where excavation itself learned its limits.
