Cities on Water

Here water replaces streets, and the city's rhythm follows tides, locks and oars. Cities on water are travel's gentlest form of disorientation — everything familiar, nothing on land.

A water city is one where the plan is decided by channels rather than streets, and the arrangement is nearly always engineering rather than picturesque accident.

The canals were dug for a reason. Amsterdam's ring was laid out from 1613 as a single project financed by selling plots and taxed by frontage, which is why the houses are narrow, tall and fitted with hoisting beams. Giethoorn's waterways are peat diggings widened. Suzhou's date from 514 BC.

Levels matter. Utrecht's wharfs sit a storey below the street so merchants could unload boats directly into their cellars — an arrangement found nowhere else.

The water is a working surface. Deliveries, refuse, commuting and construction all move by boat, and the timetable of that traffic is the city's real clock.

Restoration raises questions. Where a water town has been rebuilt as an attraction and its residents relocated, the portrait says so and lets the reader judge.

Take the boat that locals take, not the one at the main bridge.
