Tech & Innovation Hubs

These are the cities where the near future is drafted: garages turned campuses, districts turned laboratories. Tech hubs reward the curious traveller with a preview.

An innovation city is one where a decision — usually a policy, sometimes an accident — produced an industry that then reshaped the place.

Name the decision. Deng Xiaoping designated Shenzhen a Special Economic Zone in 1980. Estonia declared internet access a social right in 2000 and now registers a company in fifteen minutes. Ireland's corporate tax rate brought four American giants to a former dockland. These are datable choices, not atmospheres.

The second-order effects are the subject. Medellín answered the world's highest murder rate with cable cars into the hillside barrios and library parks, on the argument that access was the problem, and the rate fell by over ninety per cent. Dublin's arrangement transformed the housing market, and the argument about it is permanent.

Prototyping needs a place. Huaqiangbei can supply any component in an afternoon, which is why hardware iterates faster in Shenzhen than anywhere.

Not a synonym for wealthy or new. Bengaluru was a garden city and pensioners' town before it was anything else, and the infrastructure never caught up.

Ask which decision, and in what year.
