The Derby was first run on the downs above the town in 1780 and took its name from a coin toss: Lord Derby won it from Sir Charles Bunbury, whose horse then won the race. Every derby since — in football, in other sports, in other languages — borrows that name from these two miles of chalk, which is a longer reach than any single afternoon of sport has managed elsewhere.
