Coombe Estate

in London
Portrait

Three Tudor conduit heads on this hill fed Hampton Court Palace by gravity through some three and a half miles of lead pipe, with a hundred-and-twenty-nine-foot fall — enough pressure for the palace's second floor — until the supply was cut in 1876. Coombe Conduit is both a scheduled monument and Grade II* listed, dated 1538–40: the attribution to Wolsey is traditional, and the research points to Henry VIII.

This is an estate, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
