Mayfair

The Grosvenor estate has owned this ground since a 1677 marriage settlement and still lets much of it on long leases rather than selling, which is why the Georgian squares survived and why the freeholds almost never come up. The name comes from a fair held here every May until 1764, when the residents had it suppressed for lowering the tone.
