Bond Street was laid out as a speculation in the 1680s by Sir Thomas Bond, who died before it was finished and whose heirs sold it off in pieces; the northern half added in the 1720s is the one that took the name New. Sotheby's has stood on it since 1917 and the auction house, the jewellers and the galleries between them make it the address the London art trade gives.
