The name comes from a tailor who made piccadills, the stiff collars of the seventeenth century, and built a house on the proceeds that the neighbours mocked as Piccadilly Hall. Fortnum & Mason has traded on it since 1707, Burlington Arcade since 1819 and the Ritz since 1906, which makes it the oldest continuously commercial street of the eight.
