Three Thousand in Training

Charles II moved his court here to race and died still owning the palace, and the Jockey Club that formed in the town in the 1750s wrote the rules the sport uses across most of the world. Some three thousand horses are in training on the heath today across two courses and sixty stables, which makes the town less a place that holds racing than a place made entirely of it.
