The Concrete Atlantis
Architecture CitiesIndustrial Heritage
Portrait

The first steam-powered grain elevator was built here in 1843, and the concrete silos that followed were photographed into the European avant-garde by Gropius and Le Corbusier, neither of whom had seen one — Reyner Banham later called the city a concrete Atlantis. Sullivan's Guaranty Building, Wright's Martin House and Olmsted's first American park system stand within a few miles of the silos that outrank them.
