Mesa Verde
The Cliff Palaces
Gateway town: Cortez
Portrait
The Ancestral Puebloans farmed the mesa top for seven hundred years and then, around 1190, moved down into the alcoves in the canyon walls — Cliff Palace has a hundred and fifty rooms — only to leave the region entirely within a century. Ranger-led ladders are the only way into the main dwellings; book them, and drive the mesa loop for the pit houses that came first.
