Fifth Avenue

in New York City
Portrait

The mansions moved north up the avenue as Central Park opened, and the stretch facing the park became Millionaires' Row before the income tax and the Depression turned most of it into apartment blocks and museums. It held first place in the world by retail rent for most of the century and lost it to Via Montenapoleone in 2024.

This is a street, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
