Greenwich Village

in New York City
Portrait

The streets here run at odd angles because the village was built before the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 laid the grid over everything north of Houston Street, and the residents refused to give up their lanes. West 4th Street crosses West 10th, 11th and 12th, which is impossible on a grid and true here.

This is a quarter, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
