Manhattan

The island was bought in 1626 for goods valued at sixty guilders, a figure that survives because the buyer wrote it in a letter, and the grid that covers most of it was drawn in 1811 across farmland that did not yet exist as streets. It is one borough of five, and the city's name is used for it daily by people who mean only this island.
