Westchester County bought the shorefront in 1927 to clear away the disorderly concessions along it and opened Playland in May 1928 — a park designed whole, by architects and a landscape architect, on one plan with a formal mall running down to the water. It was the first in the country conceived that way, it is the most intact Art Deco park left, and the county owns it still.
