Saratoga Springs

The mineral springs came first and gave the place its name and its nineteenth-century season; the racecourse opened in 1863, the year after the first meeting was held here during the Civil War, and is among the oldest sporting venues in the country. The town still works as both, which is rare — the water built the hotels and the horses kept them full.
