El Calafate
The Glacier Balcony
Portrait
Perito Moreno is one of the few glaciers in the world in equilibrium rather than retreat, and it advances into Lago Argentino until it dams an arm of the lake — the water builds up over years and then bursts the ice bridge in a collapse that draws crowds when it is predicted. The face is five kilometres wide and seventy metres high, and it calves constantly.
