Innsbruck
A Capital in the Alps
Portrait
Innsbruck was the Habsburgs' Alpine seat, and Maximilian I's Golden Roof of 1500 — 2,657 gilded copper tiles over a balcony — was built so the court could watch tournaments in the square. The city has hosted two Winter Olympics, and the Nordkette cable car takes you from the old town to 2,300 metres in twenty minutes.
