Granada held out as the last emirate in Iberia until 1492, and the Alhambra above it is covered in Arabic inscriptions — much of it poetry written for the rooms it decorates, including verses that describe the fountains they are carved beside. Washington Irving lived in the abandoned palace in 1829 and his book began its restoration.
