Buda's hills and Pest's plain were separate towns until 1873, and the parliament built after unification — 691 rooms, the largest building in Hungary — was designed for an empire that dissolved forty years later. The city sits on a hundred thermal springs, and the Ottoman baths built in the sixteenth century are still in daily use.
