Lech caps the number of skiers on the mountain at fourteen thousand a day and closes the lifts when it is reached — a decision taken in the 1990s to protect the experience rather than maximise revenue. The Arlberg region receives among the heaviest snowfall in the Alps, and the first ski club in Austria was founded here in 1901.
