Courmayeur
South Face of Mont Blanc
Portrait
Courmayeur faces the south side of Mont Blanc, and since 1965 an eleven-kilometre tunnel has connected it to Chamonix in fifteen minutes — a link that changed both towns and that was closed for three years after a fire killed thirty-nine people in 1999. The Skyway cable car rotates as it climbs to 3,466 metres, giving a full turn of the massif on the way up.
