Megève
The Rothschild Village
Portrait
Baroness Noémie de Rothschild wanted a French alternative to St Moritz after the First World War and had Megève developed from 1916 around an existing village — which is why it has a medieval church and cobbled square rather than a planned centre. Horse-drawn sleighs still work the streets, and the skiing is gentler than its reputation suggests.
