Chamonix
At the Foot of Mont Blanc
Portrait
Two men from Chamonix reached the summit of Mont Blanc in 1786 to claim a reward offered by a Genevan scientist, and the sport of mountaineering dates from that climb; the town hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The Aiguille du Midi cable car rises 2,800 metres in twenty minutes, the greatest vertical ascent of any lift in the world.
