Grindelwald sits beneath the Eiger, whose 1,800-metre north face was called the Mordwand — the murder wall — and defeated attempts from 1935 until a four-man team succeeded in 1938. The Jungfraujoch railway, finished in 1912 after sixteen years of tunnelling through the Eiger and the Mönch, reaches 3,454 metres and is the highest station in Europe.
