Annecy
The Alpine Venice
Portrait
Lake Annecy was so polluted by the 1950s that the surrounding communes built a shared sewerage network — the first of its kind in France — and it is now among the cleanest lakes in Europe, swimmable from the town beach. The Thiou canal runs through the old town past a twelfth-century prison built on an island in mid-stream.
