Dali
The Three Pagodas
Portrait
Dali was the capital of the Nanzhao and then the Dali kingdoms for five centuries before the Mongols took it in 1253, and its Three Pagodas — the tallest from the ninth century — have survived thirty-odd earthquakes that flattened everything around them. The Bai people's white-walled courtyard houses run between Erhai lake and the Cangshan range behind.
