Eruptions laid down soft tuff that erodes into pinnacles and cuts easily with hand tools, so people have been carving dwellings here since the Bronze Age — and Byzantine monks cut hundreds of chapels with frescoes into the rock. Beneath the surface, cities like Derinkuyu descend eighteen storeys and could shelter thousands with ventilation shafts and rolling stone doors.
