Antigua Guatemala
The Three Volcanoes
Portrait
Antigua was the capital of Spanish Central America until earthquakes in 1773 convinced the crown to move the government to Guatemala City; the churches were left as ruins rather than rebuilt, and they stand roofless among low houses under three volcanoes, one of them active. Semana Santa here fills the streets with carpets of dyed sawdust that processions then destroy.
