Nassau was a pirate base until the Royal Navy took it back in 1718, then a blockade-running port in the American Civil War, then a rum-running port under Prohibition — a pattern of profitable positions that ended in offshore banking. Pastel government buildings and the Queen's Staircase are best early, then take the ferry to Paradise Island or leave for the Exumas.
